The Soul of a Photograph: Lessons from Robert Moore

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but what makes a photo truly speak?
During a recent PRSA Dallas session at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanic Garden, Dallas Voice co-founder Robert Moore shared a powerful approach to photography, one that prioritizes authenticity over technical perfection:
- Capture the soul - A photo should evoke emotion, energy, and connection.
- Embrace contrast – Light, shadow, and texture bring depth.
- Master composition – Thoughtful framing enhances storytelling.
- Keep the essence – Cropping too much can strip away meaning.
- Celebrate imperfection – The raw, unfiltered moments make an image real.
Moore’s most profound insight was that the soul in a photograph is about authenticity, not rigid precision, but the truth of a moment. Inspired by his words, attendees explored the Arboretum with fresh eyes, seeking stories rather than symmetry.
One standout image emerged from the event – the winning photo by Ebbah Realzola, accompanied by Moore’s review:

“This photo has great composition. There’s a clear foreground, middle ground, and background. The subject is elevated by both the framing and his action. The gold star here goes to mirroring the shape of the skater (straight-up torso/head and outstretched arms/hands) in the shape of the fountain. Really nice."
Photography isn’t just about documenting what we see; it’s about preserving the emotions within the frame. In imperfection, an image breathes.
A heartfelt thank you to Robert Moore, PRSA Dallas, the Dallas Arboretum and Botanic Garden, PRSA Members, and Special Guests for participating in an unforgettable experience.
