What Does It Really Mean to Be “Engaged”?

Posted by admin on May. 11, 2026  /   0

In public relations, we talk about engagement constantly. We measure it, report on it, optimize for it. Clicks. Time on page. Video views. Likes, dislikes, loves. A fraction of a second — a tap, a scroll, a pause — becomes a data point that tells a business, “Yes, this person was engaged.”

But was it real engagement?

Over time, the definition has shifted. Engagement used to be personal. Human. Face-to-face. Now it’s digital, fleeting, and often happening in a state of distraction. We “engage” while standing in line, half-watching TV, or toggling between 12 open tabs. It’s ironic that something we do almost absentmindedly has become the gold standard for measuring connection.

And here’s the kicker:

Being a volunteer for PRSA Dallas might be one of the most challenging PR gigs out there because we’re trying to engage the very people whose job it is to engage everyone else!

I say this lovingly and respectfully — PR professionals might be the hardest group to engage. We spend our days helping others build relationships, yet we often put our own relationship-building on the back burner. Personally and professionally.

So what do we do about that?

Reclaiming Real Engagement

True engagement — the kind that fills us up, not just our dashboards — requires intention. It asks us to pause long enough to notice what (and who) actually matters.

Ask yourself:

  • What activities genuinely energize me?
  • What am I curious about learning?
  • Who are the people I want to spend more time with?
  • And when I do get that time… am I present? Am I giving my attention — and asking for theirs?

As an introvert, I’ll be the first to admit that in a large crowd, I can look disengaged. My mind is racing: Am I interesting enough? Is there food in my teeth? Will I pronounce this person’s name correctly? But one-on-one? I thrive. I love coffee conversations, listening, learning, connecting.

And that’s the beauty of PRSA Dallas — it’s full of people who are open to those moments. People you can reach out to for advice, encouragement, or simply a friendly conversation.

How PRSA Dallas Is Working to Engage You

Our Board and committee members spend more time than you might think brainstorming ways to engage our members (which thankfully is a pretty engaging exercise to do!). We want to create experiences that feel meaningful, not transactional. Opportunities that help you grow, connect, and feel part of something bigger.

The saying is true: we are better together.

And we’re even better when we engage — truly engage — with each other.

Your Invitation to Engage
If you’re looking for a place to start, here are a few simple steps:

  • Connect with a fellow member on LinkedIn
  • Join our members-only LinkedIn Group and ask a question or share a thought
  • Introduce yourself to someone new at an event
  • Attend one of our member meetups
  • Tell us what would make your PRSA experience more valuable
  • And if you’re not yet a member, ask us about joining!

And of course —
join us on Friday, May 15 for UnSummit.

It’s an incredible opportunity to learn, connect, and immerse yourself in a conference built specifically for our profession.

We also have several exciting programs coming up in June, so keep an eye on our events calendar.

As we move through May, I hope you’ll find one small way to engage — with us, with your community, with your colleagues, or with yourself. The digital world may measure engagement in seconds, but the real kind? That’s measured in moments that matter.

Let’s create more of those together.
