Headline-grabbing current events prove a crisis can happen anytime and anywhere. Thursday, July 7, 2016 began like every other summer day in Dallas, but it would end would end much different. Shortly before nightfall, following what had been a peaceful Black Lives Matter organized protest in downtown Dallas, gunfire from a lone assailant rang out. By the time it was over, five police officers were dead and another nine injured. Two civilians were also wounded. The shooting was the deadliest incident for U.S. law enforcement since the terroristic attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Parkland Memorial Hospital received seven of the victims.
Mike Malaise, Senior Vice President of Communications and External Relations for Parkland, will discuss the media events that unfolded there in the minutes after the shootings and in the days and weeks that followed. What began as the tragic killing of police officers turned into a national conversation about law enforcement and race relations – with Parkland physicians in the eye of the media storm. On February 9, he will cover:
- Lessons learned and strategies PR professionals can employ in crisis planning and execution
- An overview of managing patients, families, employees, physicians, and the media during community-wide civil unrest
- Social media’s impact on crisis communication
- Effectively managing the media when you’re in the eye of the storm
